What You Should Know About Labour’s Solar Battery Rebate

| Solar Blog

If they are re-elected in the 2025 federal election, the Australian labour government has promised to introduce a rebate on solar batteries.

Here’s a quick guide to the main points of the rebate you should be aware of:

  • Homeowners can receive an approximate 30% rebate on the purchase and installation costs of solar batteries. One solar battery rebate is allowed per home.
  • It is not a 30% rebate exactly, as it will actually be calculated based on $372 per kWh (less fees) of battery size—this should be close to 30% of the purchase and installation costs, but it will ultimately depend on elements such as the battery brand chosen and other factors that could impact the installation costs.
  • The scheme is intended to commence on 1 July 2025 and end in 2030.
  • Batteries installed prior to 1 July 2025 can still qualify, provided they aren’t ‘turned on’ until then.
  • To qualify, the solar battery must have a battery size of at least 5 kWh, be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready, and be connected to a solar system.
  • While you can install battery sizes up to 100 kWh, you can only claim up to a maximum of 50 kWh for the purposes of the rebate.
  • Small businesses and community facilities can also qualify for the rebate.
  • If you already own a solar battery, you can potentially still benefit from the rebate if you change to another unit.
